Optimal Control and Spatial Heterogeneity: Pattern Formation in Economic-Ecological Models

چکیده
This paper extends Turing analysis to standard recursive optimal control frameworks in economics and applies it to dynamic bioeconomic problems where the interaction of coupled economic and ecological dynamics under optimal control over space creates (or destroys) spatial heterogeneity. We show how our approach reduces the analysis to a tractable extension of linearization methods applied to the spatial analog of the well known costate/state dynamics. We explicitly show the existence of a non-empty Turing space of diffusive instability by developing a linear-quadratic approximation of the original non-linear problem. We apply our method to a bioeconomic problem, but the method has more general economic applications where spatial considerations and pattern formation are important. We believe that the extension of Turing analysis and the theory associated with the dispersion relationship to recursive infinite horizon optimal control settings is new. JEL Classification Q2, C6

Urban planning has gone from the past to the present day to a greater extent based on physical factors, to the extent that the basis of urban planning plans and urban plans influenced urban development and physical spaces. It's The city is the product of complex economic and social relations and its spatial heterogeneity reflects the processes of widespread socio-economic-cultural-social ...

Nowadays, Spatial and social inequalities are universal and expanding phenomenon. Identification and spatial analysis of social, economic and ecological inequalities in metropolises is one of the essential and basic proceeding for planning and achieving urban sustainable development. The present research method is descriptive-analytical and using 13 sub criteria based on three main criteria of ...
متن کاملControl Theory and Economic Policy Optimization: The Origin, Achievements and the Fading Optimism from a Historical Standpoint
Economists were interested in economic stabilization policies as early as the 1930’s but the formal applications of stability theory from the classical control theory to economic analysis appeared in the early 1950’s when a number of control engineers actively collaborated with economists on economic stability and feedback mechanisms. The theory of optimal control resulting from the contributio...
متن کاملPattern Formation, Spatial Externalities and Regulation in Coupled Economic-Ecological Systems
We develop a novel theoretical framework for studying ecosystems in which interacting state variables which are affected by management decisions diffuse in space. We identify (i) mechanisms creating spatial patterns when economic agents maximize profit at each site by ignoring the impact of their actions on other sites and (ii) a diffusion induced externality. Pattern formation mechanisms and e...
متن کاملComment on “Phase separation driven by density-dependent movement: A novel mechanism for ecological patterns” by Quan-Xing Liu et al
Spatial distribution of ecological populations is rarely homogeneous. Typically, the population density exhibits considerable variability of space, in an extreme yet not uncommon case creating a “patchy” pattern where areas of high population density alternate with areas where the population density is much lower or close to zero [1]. This phenomenon, often generically referred to as ecological...
